Keeping the Culture?

Communities of color often navigate questions of membership and authenticity within our communities. In this episode, the crew tackles the nuance of cultural membership in their respective communities. What does it mean to be a card-carrying member within communities of color? And how do we hold on to that which is most sacred and recognizable to us as our cultural community’s shift?

Bemidji Community Food Shelf

About thirty years ago, Bemidji churches got together to address a basic need: hunger. Since then, the Bemidji Community Food Shelf has provided meals for thousands of our friends and neighbors. Throughout the month of March, many area food shelves will take part in the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. It’s one of the biggest food and fund raisers for many Minnesota food shelves. Area Voices producer Alauna Yust talked with Mary Mitchell, Director of the Bemidji Community Food Shelf. And Joan, a volunteer and a user of the food shelf. Here’s their conversation.

Minnesota Native News: Healing & Homelessness in Minneapolis

4 people have now died at the homeless encampment in Minneapolis.

The site – also called the Wall of Forgotten Natives for the many Native residents there — was established by individuals and families without shelter.

But it’s become the central focus of many urban Native agencies in the Twin Cities.

On October 29th those agencies gathered the community together to talk about how to move forward.

Centerstage Minnesota: The Bad Companions – Al Subola and Scott “Frenchy” Fremont join Charlie Pulkrabek

The Bad Companions are a Minneapolis band formed relatively recently in 2011. The players in The Bad Companions are a who’s who of players that have been fixtures of the Twin Cities rockabilly and roots music scene for years. The Vibro Champs, Stockcar Named Desire, Jack Knife and the Sharps, and Cadillac Kolstad are a few of the musical acts that have featured these players in the past. The Bad Companions blend modern themes, and a little bit of punk, with Rockabilly, Swingin’ Blues, and occasionally Surf music. Bad Companions leader Al Subola, and Scott “Frenchy” Fremont met up with Charlie Pulkrabek at south Minneapolis coffee shop to talk about music and stuff. Music also from Sam Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club, Denny Malmberg Quartet with Charmin Michelle, The Vibro Champs, Bob Mould, Tommy Stinson, Grandpaboy, and Julie Johnson and the No-Accounts.

Vicki Stenerson has played lots of important roles in Bemidji’s theater community. In “Leading Ladies,” put on by the Bemidji Community Theater, Vicki’s role takes her off-stage and behind-the-scenes. She’ll direct the comedy that’s rich in quick wit and – yes, a few adult themes. Vicki joined us this morning to tell us more about the production.

Community Conversations: Historical Trauma: Three Views, Part Two

Last time on Community Conversations, we introduced the theory of historical trauma. It was developed in the 1980s by Native American social worker and mental health expert Maria Yellow Horse Braveheart to explain the whole constellation of symptoms a family, community or a people experience in reaction to traumatic events.

But recent studies on the science behind intergenerational trauma suggest that people can’t just “get over” these experiences – the trauma is on their genes and can actually be passed down to each new generation.

Let’s Visit Remer: Incorporating Native Culture in School Culture

Let’s Visit is Northern Community Radio way of sharing various communities and places in our broadcast region with our listeners. This past month, Let’s Visit focused on Remer, MN. Remer is more than a palindrome. It’s a quaint, small town with a penchant for Bigfoot that serves as many students in the school district as there is population in the community itself. Northland Community Schools serves children from Outing, Boy River, Longville, and Federal Dam. Nearly half the students at Northland Community Schools are Ojibwe. Ojibwe culture has become part of the daily and extra-curricular offerings in the district. Indian Education Director Leah Monroe sat down for a visit about the impact those opportunities are having on all student and the community at large.
