Walker Community United Methodist Church was built in 1909 in south Minneapolis at 31st Street and 16th Avenue South. Named after Thomas Barlow Walker, a lumber baron who helped finance its construction, the church is synonymous with community and acceptance. In 1967, Pastor Bryan Peterson took over the parish and served for 22 years—transforming Walker Church into a gathering place for grassroots work, social justice, activism, art and new worship forms. Accepting diverse communities, the church became a center of activity that attracted countless political and arts groups. After Pastor Peterson died, Walker Church went though several leaders until 2006, when Pastor Walter Lockhart arrived. Today Pastor Lockhart continues to guide the church with love and creativity in its religious and community based initiatives. On May 27, 2012, a fire destroyed Walker Church—devastating the community that mourned the loss of the building’s rich history. Today Walker Church members continue to meet and worship, and are planning to build a new structure. Produced by Dixie Treichel.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying restrictions not going anywhere any time soon, local non-profit organizations are doing their best to adapt and evolve, and one particular organization has found a deeper connection with its mission as this process continues. In today’s Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack talks with Executive Director Caryl Turnow and KVSC Alumna Chrissy Gaetke from the Central Minnesota Community Foundation about the new direction their work has taken. While the Foundation has had a good response to the virus, they now look to the recovery process with upcoming chances for community members to “Get on the Bus” for virtual tours of the organizations that the Community Foundation is helping as well as a series of webinars designed to enhance actions within our communities.
The next chance to “Get on the Bus” will be this Monday, November 16 with a virtual tour of the new Tri-County Humane Society building.
Northern Community Radio launched a new program called Let’s Visit this summer. Each month we focus on one community or area in northern Minnesota. Our first visit had us traveling to Crosby, MN. It did not disappoint and we are definitely going back! Crosby was at a crossroads after the mining industry pulled out of the area nearly 30 years ago. Since that time the community has re-established itself as a recreation destination and the shift has had a direct, positive impact on economy, livability and community growth. In this segment of Let’s Visit, we connect with Laura Huisinga who, along with her husband Nick, owns and operates the Cuyuna Brewing Company in downtown Crosby. Laura and Nick are the perfect example of how the vibe of a recreation destination has attracted new people to transplant their lives and dreams into the Crosby area.
