CSMN0174 – The Color Pharmacy

“The Color Pharmacy Fills My Prescription” By Doug MacRostie. The Color Pharmacy is definitely one of the most exciting bands out of Minnesota. They create experimental indie-rock music with a unique, unpredictable, and edgy style. Over the past two years, The Color Pharmacy has toured all over the U.S., and will be performing at SXSW for the third time this year. They did an alternate soundtrack to a segment of the original version of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 2006, and more recently a soundtrack to the French film ‘The Red Balloon’. Following their EP “DeTour” the Color Pharmacy is back with the full-length record “Texatonka” which is currently available online. And multi-media mastermind Jake Dilley of the Color Pharmacy will join me on Centerstage MN this week from his home studio in Minneapolis.

The name of the album, “Texatonka” was a result of their initial recording session getting flooded out with water seeping through the walls and power outlets. They had to move for the rest of the recording, and the bulk of it was done in Jake’s basement (often interrupted by his cats). His house is on the corner of Minnetonka and Texas avenue in Minneapolis: Texatonka.

We’ll also hear from a couple Bemidji bands that are operating out of the Twin Cities. The Magic Castles are a psychedelic dream-pop band and we’ll hear from the album “Dreams of Dreams of Dreams.” And we’ll hear from Murzik’s self-titled CD. They are a dark-folk band that includes accordion and saxophone along with the usual drums and guitar.

Ampers secures $4.3 million in state funding for community radio stations in Minnesota

…the local communities they serve, the stations not only provide entertainment, education, and information about community events, they are critical to the community’s safety. They don’t just broadcast the emergency…

Special Edition of Minnesota Native News: Bemidji, Rocking the Boat Part 1

Across the U.S. age-old racism and inequities are once again gaining the public’s attention, with movements like Black Lives Matter. In Minnesota, when it comes to disease, school drop-outs, incarceration, Native Americans endure some of the greatest racial disparities in the state. But there is work being done in towns across the state to take on these disparities. Towns like Bemidji — a small city in Minnesota’s north woods. Here, Natives and non-Natives have been working for decades to focus attention on the root causes of these problems and to forge a new vision for the future.

Reporter Melissa Townsend tells the story of their progress.

This is the first in a two part series in the extended edition of Minnesota Naive News.

Canadian North Shore Community Questions Nuclear Waste Storage

Will a nuclear waste storage facility be constructed in the Lake Superior Basin? The answer is: possibly. Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization is presently looking for a site to construct a storage facility where nuclear waste will be buried in rock 500 meters to one kilometer underground. Based on geological features, areas near Lake Superior are suitable for such a facility and some communities on the Canadian North Shore have expressed interest in the project. In this edition of Points North, Shawn examines one such community, as it weighs the pros and cons of taking on the project.
