A lot of us are familiar with Will Weaver and his books, novels, short stories and his writing for young adult readers. Will is an author and a professor, and he’s also the founder of the Lit Weaver website. Last month he read to a full house at the Watermark Art Center in Bemidji. Area Voices producer Alauna Yust was there, too, recording the reading. Here’s Will Weaver, reading a passage from “The Last Hunter: An American Family Album.”
Will Weaver grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. He’s attended St. Cloud State, the University of Minnesota, and Stanford. He was a Professor of English at Bemidji State University for twenty-four years. Will Weaver is a full-time writer now, having written in the range of a dozen books of fiction and nonfiction. He is also a poet.

Who is being represented in new books? We are celebrating and lifting diverse voices in new books, those that have long been silenced but in doing so have we left out boys? What is the role of publishers in this? Finally, we make a lot of assumptions about boys and reading–-are any of them true?
Our guests today are right in the thick of this, we’ll be hearing from Will Weaver, writer from Bemidji and author of A Gravestone Made of Wheat, Memory Boy, and many other middle grade and young adult books, and Misty Jobe, 8th grade English teacher from the Brainerd area.
Heidi Holtan talked with Bemidji author Will Weaver about young adult novels and his latest “The Survivors” a sequel to the bestselling “Memory Boy”. Will also talked about the young adult books that were influential in his growing up years. Also in studio was local author Jamie Lee talking about a writing conference in Fosston, MN.
Will Weaver retired from 24 years as a professor at Bemidji State University to write full time. He has published something like a dozen books, fiction and nonfiction. And he is also a poet.

Will Weaver is a highly successful writer who has published mainly in the area of young-adult fiction. Here though we have an adult non-fiction memoir. Dan Sinykin provides a succinct, illuminating description of “The Last Hunter: An American Family Album.”

Will Weaver, Bemidji-area author of books like “Sweet Land,” is also deep into the young-adult writing business. His current entry in that field is a trilogy of Motornovels, books about a teenage stock car racer working his way into the big time. Wanting to attract attention for the novels and get young people, especially young men, reading, Weaver jumped into the real thing about three years ago.
