Last month, shock comedian Ralphie May was schedule for a performance at the Sanford Center in Bemidji. Controversy arose after some of his racially charged material surfaced and amid protest the show was canceled. Rail River Folk School in Bemidji will host Bemidji Pride in celebration of all things LGBTQ+. Family-friendly events begin at 1pm and include speakers, vendors, food, kids activities and loads of fun. Saturday night Foxby will entertain at 7pm and the drag show begins at 8pm! After the drag show, a late night dance party will top the night off.

In this Area Voices segment, they share very different personal experiences growing up and coming out, the positive power of occasions like Pride events, and advice for parents on how to best support their LGBTQ+ children.

April 4-7 is Zeitgeist New Music’s Early Music Festival. It takes place at Studio Z in Saint Paul and includes concerts, and workshops about the life and music of composer Pauline Oliveros, who is the focus of this years’ festival. Zeitgeist percussionist Heather Barringer talked with Phil Nusbaum about the early music festival.
