Aabitose: Visit with a Metis Hempster in the Oneida Nation: This week, Winona LaDuke speaks with “hempster” Blake Hunter, a Metis hemp farmer in Batoche, Saskatchewan, as well as members of the Oneida Nation tribal council, Councilman Paul Ninham and Vice-Chairman Greg Madson, who are “not hempsters” but were visiting with Blake and discussing the potential of growing hemp. Additional audio is included, on the health benefits of hemp, from “Charlotte’s Web and Zaki’s Journey”, where the healing impacts of components of hemp are chronicled (www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH5yzEu3JGQ) and from from “Standing Silent Nation” from PBS’s P.O.V. series (July 3, 2007), which details the government crack-down on Indigenous hemp-growers from the Lakota Nation on the Pine Ridge reserve (www.pbs.org/pov/standing/)
Tonight on the Live Feed we learn about a group that started off as a husband and wife team, then grew into a larger ensemble – sometimes consisting of 9 members. Playing Good-Time, Old-Time Hillbilly music, this band from the Mississippi-headwaters community of Kirkwood Hollow, MN, has been playing regularly at the Minneapolis’ 331 Club every Monday night since 2005. We learn how the group grew, what it’s like having your significant other in the band, and lessons learned along the way.
