KMOJ – Sex Trafficking – Breaking Free – Women

Sex traffic. At KMOJ, we’re not letting it hide. We are pleased to present two hours of programming about people in our community trying to end it. We are proud that last year’s program on sex trafficking won a first place award from the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in the special projects category.

In the new hour about women, you’ll meet community leaders drawing a safety net around victims and survivors. Many of them speak from their own experience being trafficked. They say it’s important to connect sexual exploitation of women today with slavery and colonialism. They say many resources are available within and because of community, but more help and support is needed. These are stories of strength, resilience and hope.

In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre firmly planted in its community

In 1973 a small group of artists met in the basement of Walker Church in south Minneapolis and formed Powderhorn Puppet Theatre. Six years later the name changed to In Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, and nearly 30 years later the troupe is still going strong. Using the art of transformation in its stories and ceremonial performances, the company creates main-stage productions, educational programs, street performances and an annual May Day Parade and Festival that welcomes community participation. HOBT uses a variety of techniques, traditions and materials, including gigantic and small-rod puppets, shadow puppetry, hand puppets, colorful costumes and unique masks of all shapes and sizes. Both human and non-human characters are created, and performances focus on social justice and environmental themes. Still based in the Powderhorn neighborhood, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre has grown into an internationally renowned theater with roots deeply planted in its community. For more infomration, visit http://www.hobt.org/. Produced for KFAI by Dixie Treichel.

MN Reads: “Waterfall” by Mary Casanova

Mary Casanova knew that there was talent and artistry – and mental illness – in her gene pool.

So in her third Rainy Lake historical novel, she spent some time at the St. Peter State Hospital Museum, creating a character who was not only a talented painter – she’d been committed to an insane asylum by her family, a widespread practice at the time that pioneering journalist Nellie Bly wrote about first hand in 1887.

The Untold Story of Artist Mick Benson and His Upcoming Exhibit at the Whit Gallery

In today’s Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack dodges roving packs of grandmas as he follows artist and teacher Mick Benson through the hallways of Country Manor’s Waterford Apartments to talk about his watercolor paintings hanging throughout the building and his experiences that shaped his art. Benson will be having an exhibit and art sale at The Whit Gallery in downtown St. Cloud from November 1 through the 14th with a couple of opportunities to meet the 88 year old artist.

Those times and dates, however, are still variable depending upon health and other issues, so keep an eye on www.thewhitgallery.com for more information!
