He was also one of Minnesota’s first lieutenant governors, a US congressman, a populist party candidate for vice president and a bestselling author of one of the first science fiction books. Minnesota has one of the more robust black newspaper scenes in the country. At one time, there were nearly one hundred. The oldest such newspaper is The Minnesota Spokesman Recorder, based in Minneapolis.
