Today on Boozhoo Nanaboozhoo we learn the story of how maple syrup was discovered and harvested. As Nanaboozhoo tells the story we learn lots of Ojibwe words to do with April and maple syrup. Here is what we learned.

Overt racism is more and more prominent. From hotels banning Native Americans to the crew’s own personal experiences in racist housing practices, from it taking more than a hundred years to pass an anti-lynching law to recent conflicts between communities of color. Racism has gone from hidden and passive-aggressive to open and overt.
Lara Hicks graduated from Bemidji High School in 2017. As Executive Assistant and Assistant United Nations (UN) Representative for UNANIMA International at the UN, her work empowers women and children living in extreme poverty across the globe. Katie Carter caught up with Lara at her office just as the 66th Annual Commission on the Status of Women was winding down. They discussed Lara’s journey to the UN, her work, and what gives her hope for women and girls in the future. Lara also shared advice for anyone considering work in global affairs.

Today we hit the backwaters of the Mississippi river with an outdoor hike organized by the Winona Outdoor Collaborative. The hike started at Latsch Beach, went across the wagon bridge and through Aghaming Park and Reserve. Alexa Shapiro, the Operations Director for the Winona Outdoor Collaborative will be our guide today.
