Native Lights | stories of people within Minnesota’s Native communities
This is a special 29 minute edition of Minnesota Native News from the Nett Lake Village on the Bois Forte Reservation.
Melissa Townsend and George Strong explore how this small village is taking to the air waves to try and revive their Anishinabe traditions in a changing time.
This week on Minnesota Native News we hear from State Representative Susan Allen.
Allen was a tribal attorney living in the Powderhorn neighborhood in south Minneapolis when – in 2012 – she was elected the first Native American woman to serve in the House of Representatives.
She is part of the DFL party and now represents Minneapolis District 2-B.
Out of the 201 members of the legislature, Allen is one of 7 people of color. She sat down with reporter Melissa Townsend to talk about the importance of bringing her Native culture with her to the Capitol.
This week on Minnesota Native News, updated state road maps will reflect new tribal land boundaries, White Earth is working to add 1900 acres, a court ruling OKs DNR Regulations on Lake Mill Lacs and a state-wide alliance works to increase public investment in Native language immersion programs.
This week on Minnesota Native News – a critique of the state hearings over the proposed Sandpiper pipeline, an assessment of tribal lands’ vulnerability to climate change, the Bois Forte State of the Band address and an exhibit of artist Julie Buffalohead’s work in St. Paul.
The national news site Al Jazeera America recently published a five part series focused on Native American gangs in Minneapolis. Online reaction to the stories has been mixed. Reporter Melissa Townsend explores the author’s motivations and hears local reaction.
