It’s Black History Month, and many Minnesotans assume African Americans didn’t play a large roll in in MN History…WRONG! Barry Babcock, a local historian, talks with us about George Bonga and his family. George Bonga was an important, and often forgotten, Native/African American who was important and influential in early development of the MN Territory and the State of MN.
In this episode of the “Untold Stories of Central Minnesota,” Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack visits with author Walt Bachman about his book “Northern Slave, Black Dakota: The Life and Times of Joseph Godfrey.” This book details the life of an escaped slave and his role in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 as well as the US Army’s pre-Civil War practice of paying officers to keep slaves. In a cosponsored event by the Stearns History Museum and the SCSU History Department, Walt Bachman gave a presentation on Wednesday Oct 16, 2013, at SCSU in the Voyageurs Room in the Atwood Memorial Center to discuss his research and findings.
