Douglas R. Ewart: improvisational artist, musician, composer and teacher

Composer, improviser, sculptor, mask and instrument maker, Douglas R. Ewart is also an educator, lecturer, consultant and visionary. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he immigrated to Chicago in 1963, and moved to Minnesota in 1989. He traveled to Japan in 1987 as part of a U.S.-Japan Creative Arts Fellowship, where he studied both modern Japanese culture and the traditional Buddhist shakuhachi flute. He has performed around the world in several ensembles, including the Nyahbingi Drum Choir, the Clarinet Choir, Douglas R. Ewart & Inventions, Douglas R. Ewart & Quasar and Douglas R. Ewart & Stringnets. As an instrument-maker, Ewart creates unique varieties of winds and percussion. He also handcrafts masks that have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and elsewhere. This story was produced by Dixie Treichel.

Youth Performance Company

NWICDC: Creating Pathways of Opportunity and Wellness Steeped in Ojibwe Culture

The Northwest Indian Community Development Center in Bemidji provides a wide range of stabilizing supports for the region’s native community. Housing and parenting resources, employment counseling and trainings, youth programming, educational assistance, cultural experiences and community events are all part of the holistic approach to wellness steeped in Ojibwe culture.

MN Native News: Talking Sexual Health

Last month, the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis had a virtual watch party on social media, bringing together viewers to see what community members are saying about sexual health and and related topics, including why it’s difficult to talk about sex.

We’ll hear more about how the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis works with the community to talk about sexual health.

But first… the US Census is well on its way, collecting information from citizens across the country… And, there’s still time to fill out the Census.

The U.S. Census Bureau has extended the 2020 census deadline to September 30th.
