CSMN0151 – Charlie Parr

This week on Centerstage MN we’re going to hear a live concert by Charlie Parr with an opening set from Nikki and the RueMates. It was recorded at the 331 Club in NE Minneapolis, a long-time hotbed of MN music, by KFAI, our sister station in the Twin Cities.

Charlie Parr is an amazing musician who has been more referenced as an inspiration for northern MN musicians than anyone other than Bob Dylan. He has a very traditional and “dark” presentation of blues music along with traditional and original folk. From Duluth, Charlie has helped define the music scene in NE MN, along with bands like Trampled by Turtles, as very raw and authentic. We’ve had Charlie perform live on Centerstage MN before, and thanks to KFAI for this opportunity to share another of his performances.

Nikki and the RueMates music has been played on Centerstage MN before, but we haven’t been able to arrange getting them to perform in-studio, so it is very cool to have this opening set to enjoy before Charlie Parr. They are a 3 piece from Minneapolis ranging from acoustic blues to psychedelic folk.

Also, Maddi Frick will be talking with Troy Rogers about Bradfest, a memorial music festival, organized by the Friends of Brad Memorial Foundation, that will benefit young Minnesota musicians and honor the the life of Bradley E. Rozman featuring an eclectic mix of local and regional live music, entertainment, refreshments, a silent auction, and more.

Honor the Earth Environmental Features: Gardening North of 60

On today’s Honor the Earth Environmental Features, Winona speaks with “garden doula” Lone Sorenson, a resident of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, on Dene territories. Lone is a “Danish transplant to the north” and has lived on Dene homelands for 26 years. North of 60, Lone has about 120 frost-free days to garden, she says, despite being 1,000 miles north of Edmonton. Together, Winona and Lone discuss what gardening north of 60 looks like, including the foods and the harvesting methods in Dene territories and food security in the north, along with the community gardening programs that Lone supports in her work.

And, don’t miss the gardening tip of the week! Lone shares a soil-growing tip from the north, which involves caribou hair.

CSMN0165 – Mary LaPlant

By Doug MacRostie, host of Centerstage MN. I could sit and talk with Mary LaPlant all day; she’s one of those positive people that is just fun to be around. Classically trained on the violin, Mary is a 3 Time MN State Fiddle Champion with 2 albums out, Serenity & Out of Nowhere. Her style is lyrical and sure. While Mary clearly loves music, her concern for the environment was stronger and she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Minor in Music. With the sounds of the woods and birds recorded and mixed into her albums, you can close your eyes and picture her sitting high in a tree playing music with the wilderness. Mary says, “When I’m playing violin and when I’m in the forest, time stands still and I am fully alive”. She’ll perform in-studio for us and we’ll talk about her music this week on Centerstage MN.

We’ll have a set of Hip-Hop style MN music too with Brother Ali, Dalia and Mayda. And a set representing Northern MN including a song from the forthcoming release from the high energy Iron Range string band Matt Ray and Those Damn Horses, called “Then & Now”.

Next week I welcome back Big Walter Smith, and we’ll hear another song from his new CD “Royal Blue Cadillac.”
