Sexual Assault, Consent, and Talking with Kids

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Gabrielle Congrave Baggenstoss is a Regional Navigator for Support Within Reach, a sexual violence resource center. In this segment of Area Voices, she discusses the prevalence of sexual assault, what consent is, how to help children grow stronger in their ability to protect their bodies, and much more.

The Bemidji Area Arts Endowment (BAAE) has been supporting arts projects thru grants and scholarships in the Bemidji area since 1997. May 7th is the next deadline for grant applications. Amanda Davenport is Vice President of the BAAE. She joined the morning show to discuss the BAAE, projects it supports, how Covid-19 has changed arts related projects and much more .


Patty Peterson Presents Jazz Women All-Stars Streamed from the Dakota in Minneapolis Twice on Mother’s Day

Patty Peterson presents Jazz Women All-Stars on Mother’s Day, May 9. The show is available by streaming at 3PM and 7PM this Sunday. Patty gets her jazz inspiration from her mother, Jeannie, who was a jazz singer and vocalist. Patty says that some of her mother’s words motivate her.


Maud Hixson Presents the Doris Day Songbook Live at Crooners the Saturday and Sunday

Maud Hixson’s Doris Day show was such a hit at Crooner’s that she’s doing it again Mother’s Day weekend, May 8 at 5PM and May 9 at 4. It turns out that Doris Day influenced the singing style of Maud Hixson. In Maud’s conversation with Phil Nusbaum, first Maud first wanted to listen to a little Doris Day.


Minnesota Music Notes Featuring Preston Gunderson

This week on Minnesota Music notes Brett Carter features Preston Gunderson. Gunderson grew up on the Iron Range and went to school in Duluth, where he recorded his first full-length album and a five song EP.

Preston Gunderson has made splashes on American Idol and The Voice, and has toured with Brandie Carlile, Trampled by Turtles and Jeremy Messersmith. He also featured Jillian Rae on his 2nd full album Getting Good At Starting Over.


Steven Parker, BSU Diversity Officer

Steven Parker is Bemidji State University’s Diversity Officer. He joined the morning show to discuss his work, the impact police related deaths have on the minoritized populations he serves, and he shared his thoughts regarding a potential path to healing.
