Local photographer and outdoor educator Bryan Hansel recently completed a canoe expedition following an old route taken in 1879 by state geologist Newton Horace Winchell. Ann spoke with Bryan about the trip.

Recent UMD graduate Hattie Peach and her sister Grace (a recent high school graduate) recently released an EP, also featuring their dad John on drums. The self-titled release has an alt-country sound that showcases the siblings’ harmonies. This Americana singer/songwriter was known more for his work as a local environmental educator and activist before he decided to take his singing and guitar playing off the couch and on stage. He’s releasing his debut album, Smoky Gold, on May 14; it features contributions from members of The Infamous Stringdusters, Kind Country, Feeding Leroy, and others. He joined us for a session in honor of Duluth’s Homegrown Music Festival on May 3 , 2021.
This Cloquet native was on tour in Europe with his band The Social Animals when the pandemic shut everything down. Now based in Nashville, Clark has had the opportunity to work on new material with the band in the past year, and is preparing for a solo tour that kicks off in Minneapolis on June 4; he’ll perform in Duluth on Saturday, June 5 (listen to find out where!).
Kendra Glenn started singing as a young kid in Chicago. She has blossomed into a busy upper midwest soulful singer who also writes some of her songs. Kendra sings Friday and Saturday July 2 and 3 at the Umbra in Minneapolis. When she spoke with Phil Nusbaum, Kendra first addressed her early interest in singing.
Diane Wilson’s newest book The Seed Keeper weaves the stories of four native women living between 1862 and 2002. It’s a story of awakening, re-connection to the land and and a sort of re-birth in terms of both personal identities and cultural histories. Wilson joined the morning show to discuss the book, its inspiration and how she hopes the novel influences readers.

Ted Unseth is known to many for leading the Classic Jazz group, the Americana Classic Jazz Orchestra. But Ted has had quite a musical journey. He moved from Chicago to Albert Lea, Minnesota as a young kid. As the son of a Lutheran minister, classical music was on in the house. But Ted had an unexpected response to early piano lessons, as he told Phil Nusbaum.
