The Untold Story of 100 Years at the Stearns County Courthouse

In today’s Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack will see you in court as the Stearns County Courthouse celebrates its 100th birthday. Joining Jeff is county spokesperson Janet Midas and Stearns History Museum historian Steve Penick as they discuss the rich history of the courthouse beginning with Prohibition and running through today.
A celebration at the courthouse is happening on Tuesday, Nov. 15th from 4:30 until 7:00 with chances to explore the building, music, games, trivia, and the sheriff department showcasing equipment from the past and present.

The Untold Story of Mississippi River Mayhem with Author and Historian Dean Klinkenberg

In today’s Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack dives into the Mississippi River and all its mayhem with author and historian Dean Klinkenberg. From pirates to pandemics, Klinkenberg has sifted through 200 years of history involving the river to curate an overview of how Americans dealt with and adapted to one of the most defining geographic features of our culture. Through floods, earthquakes, and exploding steamboats, Mississippi River communities continue to persevere and celebrate the beauty of Old Man River.

Dean Klinenberg will be at the Beaver Island Brewery as part of the Stearns History Museum’s Hops & History program discussing his book, Mississippi River Mayhem, Disasters, Tragedy, and Murder on Ol’ Man River on Thursday, Nov. 10, beginning at 5:30 pm.

Located on the top floor of the Miller Learning Resource Center, the University Archives hosts and provides access to an amazing depth of historic material. In today’s conversation, Tom talks about newly digitized video of U.S. President Eisenhower crowning Homecoming Princess Joyce Pearson in 1952, the truth behind rumors of ghost stories around campus, the World War II Oral History Project, and many other historical tidbits as we celebrate National Archive Month in October.
