Serenity’s Hardstyle: Quit Your Day Job

Isabel Pone a.k.a Serenity was sick of just getting by on her a nine to five job. She’s an up and coming Dj and vocalist within Minneapolis’s growing Hardstyle scene. After leaving her day job, Serenity wanted to let others know how she was feeling. She reached out to her friend and fellow Hardstyle artist, DJ Snoopiiz to begin work on a track. The result of their collaboration, “Be Free” was released on International Women’s Day in 2020. KFAI’s Madeline Karita Fleming tells the story.

The View from Split Rock: A Lighthouse Keeper’s Life

Lee Radzak served for 36 years as the resident site manager at the Minnesota Historical Society’s Split Rock Lighthouse before retiring in 2019.

Lee is now out with a book, “The View from Split Rock: A Lighthouse Keeper’s Life,” all about the everyday experiences and seasonal round of the life of a lighthouse keeper at Split Rock. He joined Brian to tell us more about the book, and the process of writing it.

Beltrami County Historical Society: Celebrating 125 years of Bemidji History

The Beltrami County Historical Society celebrates the release of three new publications Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 4-8pm. Emily Thabes became Executive Director of the history center in April of this year. Sue Bruns contributed to and collaborated on the publications. In this interview Thabes shares how her history in library science lends itself well to her role at the history center and Bruns discusses the processes of creating publications that encapsulate 125 years of Bemidji’s history.


Fiddle Camp instructors stopped by KBXE this morning!

Headwaters Music and Arts hosts its annual Fiddle Camp this week. Campers range from beginners to advanced players who are playing fiddles, cello, guitar and bodhran. Instructors Brian Miller, Mary Vanorny, Claire Vanorny, Carrie Dlutkowski, and Eric Carlson stopped by the KBXE studio to discuss what happens at fiddle camp, how they each were charmed by Irish music, and what they hope the campers take back into their real lives after camp week is finished.

It’s National Farmer’s Market Week! Erin Haefele from the Walker Farmer’s Market joined the morning show today. She discussed the Walker market’s humble beginnings, the positive impact it makes on the Walker community, and how it’s grown to over 40 vendors selling vegetables, flowers, art, baked goods and much more every Thursday from 9-2.
