Folk Schools

We’re celebrating the Folk School movement this week on Stay Human. Rail River in Bemidji and North House Folk School in Grand Marais are well-established, and today we’ll visit with some folks at the Ely Folk School, get a national perspective from the Folk School Alliance, and hear about the Center for Belonging in Decorah, Iowa, to get a glimpse of how well we can educate each other.


Thirteen: Nonconformity

Alice Blessing ’s newest portrait exhibit Thirteen: Nonconformity began as study of feminism and girls coming of age in a patriarchal society. It evolved into something much more nuanced when her own child came out as non-binary. The show now addresses intersectionality, gender, representation, and diversity all while celebrating children’s individuality.


Soul-Hope

With the upcoming closing of the Racial Reckoning Project, Georgia and reporter Feven Gerezgiher reflect on their time together and how this project has brought them some hope during a difficult time.


Every Child Matters: Bemidji’s 1st Orange Shirt Day

Bemidji recently held its first Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters event. Attendees recognized the significant impact residential boarding schools have had on Indigenous communities. They shared stories, celebrated lives, sent prayers, and raised hope.

Word Up! today on Stay Human – linger in the linguacious, with storyteller Terry O’Brien’s Death by Dictionary, Leah Lemm’s “Words”, and essays from Steve Downing, Jeff Weintraub and Scott Stowell, on the evolution of writing, and the abracadabra of language. Words and music, celebrating the Joy of Lex.


Happy Trails

With firearms season over for this year, it’s safe to get back up into the woods. Today on Stay Human, it’s happy trails – Dan Hegstad is fat tire biking ay Cayuga, Joel Sjogren takes a tour of Red Head Mountain Bike Park, Cory Kolodji tests himself on the Superior Hiking Trail, and Matthew Miltich takes a life-changing journey down the oldest trail in northern Minnesota.
