Area Voices: Kelly Schultz and her Angeline Alice Millinery

Kelly Schultz has a fascination with fascinators and hats. Her Bemidji-based Angeline Alice Millinery began after she was was inspired by head adornments worn by guests at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April of 2011. She began creating pieces of art for people’s heads shortly thereafter and within one year, her creations had found their way to a fashion runway. Since 2012, her works of art have been included in weddings, Kentucky Derby parties, fashion spreads, and even found their way to London Hat Week! Bemidji Community Theater Brings Boeing Boeing to the Stage!

Bemidji Community Theater brings its second run of performances of the farce Boeing Boeing to the Chief Theater this weekend. We spoke with Derrick Houle and Julie Kaiser on the morning show about it.


Area Voices: Winona LaDuke Honors the Earth

The Rail River Folk School in Bemidji will host the world premiere of the film LN3: Seven Teachings of the Anishinaabe in Resistance this Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm. In addition to the film, Red Lake rapper Thomas X will perform as will singer Brendan Strong – both artists are featured in the film. Honor the Earth co-founder Winona LaDuke will also be in attendance for discussions and conversations about moving toward a future that is less dependent on fossil fuels.
In this Area Voices segment, Winona discusses the film, her perspectives on the oil industry, her passion for honoring the earth and protecting water, her own dependency on fossil fuels and options for a greener, more environmentally resilient future.


Area Voices: Aimee Bouchard, Painter

Aimee Bouchard parlayed her artistic passion into her career as a graphic desinger. She’s now moved full circle, from designing on the computer screen back to designing on watercolor paper.

Using gouache paint, Aimee creates bold, playful, folk art styled work. Her images can be found on prints and cards available at the Art and Antique Mall as well as the Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN. They can also be found on another medium, fabric. The bright, playful images caught the eye of the Quilt Minnesota board member Jana Weise and now Aimee has designed several prints that will be availabe exclusively during the 2020 Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop happening July 31t thru August 16th, 2020.

Cold Beans on a Cold Winter Day in NW Minnesota!

Shantelle Carey of Thief River Falls, MN is a regional artist who recently moved to Thief River Falls and has become active in promoting the arts in TRF. A NWMAC gallery at Northland Community & Technical College is displaying her work as part of their “Winter Fantasy” art exhibit. Her creation “An Individual Exploration of Spirituality and her “Bean” series are on display and for sale to the public.

Marlena Myles: Native, Digital Art That is Both Beautiful and Educational

Marlena Myles is one of few Dakota women creating digital art. Her work highlights indigenous culture with aesthetic appeal and educational opportunities. In addition to gallery showings, her many projects include illustrations for the books Kikta Wo/Kikta Ye! and Thanku, Poems of Gratitude and the book cover design for Indian No More. She’s created fabric designs, animated films, and even a coloring book of Dakota plants inspired by the writings of Henry David Thoreau that provides an opportunity for learning Dakota language and history. Her Dakota Land Maps illustrate the story of the past, present and future of Dakota people in their traditional homelands.
