Every First Friday, our Area Voices producer Katie Carter gives us an idea of what’s going on in Bemidji, Brainerd and other communities in our listening area. Today she told us about a Thomas Stillday’s beadwork exhibit at the Watermark Art Center in Bemidji, events happening at the Crossing Arts Alliance in Brainerd and she discussed a new show at the Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia.
Dawnette Davis is a retired teacher and Grand Rapids artist who makes hand-dyed silk garments and shawls. She sells her art at sales and shows around Minnesota. But Covid-19 has shut down many upcoming arts events. These days Dawnette is using some of her talent, some leftover cotton fabric, and her serging sewing machine to produce cloth facemasks. She talked with Heidi Holtan on the KAXE/KBXE Morning Show.

What does “home” mean to you? Does the word home conjure up a certain place or time or feeling? Today on Art Beat we talk to Cecillia Cornejo, artist in residence at Lanesboro Arts in Lanesboro, MN. Cecillia is a Chilean-born documentary filmmaker, artist and teacher who lives in Northfield, MN. Her new project that she has brought to Lanesboro is called the Wandering House. The Wandering House is an old ice fishing shack that Cecillia has converted into a mobile audio recording booth. She is exploring the themes of people and place and the concepts of belonging and home in rural communities in Minnesota. Participants are encouraged to tell their stories in The Wandering House, their own version of what home means to them, in their own words. Original Air Date: 10/01/2019
On this episode of Art Beat we talk to local historian and stereo photography buff, Bob Taunt. Bob recently gave a presentation about the history of stereo photography at the Winona County History Center. The presentation was a compliment to an exhibit titled Victorian Winona: Through the Lens of Charles Tenney. Charles Tenney was a photographer in the Winona area in the late 1800s and produced many stereo images of the area as was common at that time. Original Air Date: 09/20/2019
