Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. This is highly acclaimed author Tana French’s newest novel it’s called The Searcher.
FAMILY IN SIX TONES is a duel memoir co-authored by writer and law professor at the Chapman University School of Law, Lan Cao and her daughter Harlan Margaret Van Cao. The idea of the memoir grew out of an episode of National Public Radio’s Storycorp that Lan and Harlan recorded in 2015 on Lan’s experience as a refugee from Vietnam during the war. The memoir is a very personal look at the unique struggles of refugees as well as the universal tug-of-war between mothers and daughters.

Beltrami County Auditor and Treasurer JoDee Treat oversees Beltrami County’s elections. Mark Morrissey volunteered as an election judge for the first time this year. Covid-19 presented challenges, logistically. Trump has alluded to election fraud, baselessly. Treet and Morrissey joined the morning show to discuss Election Day in Beltrami County-everything from adjustments made to address Covid-19 to the checks and balances within the system that ensure election integrity.
Louise Waakaa’igan spent 16 years in prison. During that time, she leaned on a coping mechanism she developed in her early teens – poetry. Inspired and encouraged by the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, she honed her writing skills while incarcerated. Her first collection of poetry This is Where is autobiographical, symbolic, honest and steeped in her Ojibwe culture. Louise discusses her poetry, prison life and freedom in this segment of Area Voices.
The MacRostie Art Center recently hosted Seen, an exhibit melding poetry, prose, photography, and prison. The project is a collaboration between The Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop and We Are All Criminals. You can view it here.
