A Poet – And He Knows It!

Dale Jacobson of Alvarado, MN taught poetry and writing skills at the University of North Dakota for multiple decades. And, in his retirement Dale is sharing his skills with others in northwest Minnesota – with the help of the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council. He has a rich background in expression through the written word.

It’s the time of year when gardeners are busy… busy harvesting, busy saving seeds, busy prepping their plots for the upcoming Minnesota winter. Terry Leinbach’s garden is a wonderland of walking paths, sit spots, flowers, and food. She joined the morning show to discuss how the harvesting, seed saving, and how drought has impacted her gardening this year.

Bemidji’s summer concert series wraps up tonight with Known Only Locally!

It’s become an end of summer tradition for Known Only Locally to take the stage as the last performance of the Mississippi Music on the Bemidji Waterfront weekly concert series. Tonight is the night. Originating in the ‘70s, the band has lost and added members over the decades, but one thing has never wavered – the rich, textured, homegrown, original sound that is undeniably Known Only Locally. That sound has long been part of the fabric of Northern Community Radio and the current iteration of the band, a mix of original and new members, stopped by the KBXE studio to share some history and some music.


State Auditor Julie Blaha discusses real world impact of small forfeitures on families and the real joys in creating crop art

The MN State Auditor’s Office recently released a report indicating the negative impact small forfeitures have on Minnesotans and their families. MN Auditor Julie Blaha joined the morning show to discuss the data behind the report, how it might be used to inform police reform, and in a surprise MN State Fair Week twist, she also discussed her award winning crop art!


Celebrating and Supporting Bemidji’s LGBTQ+ Community

Rail River Folk School in Bemidji will host Bemidji Pride in celebration of all things LGBTQ+. Family-friendly events begin at 1pm and include speakers, vendors, food, kids activities and loads of fun. Saturday night Foxby will entertain at 7pm and the drag show begins at 8pm! After the drag show, a late night dance party will top the night off.

Ben Cahill and Christian Taylor-Johnson are part of the organizing team behind Bemidji Pride. In this Area Voices segment, they share very different personal experiences growing up and coming out, the positive power of occasions like Pride events, and advice for parents on how to best support their LGBTQ+ children.


Bob Shimek on the centering experience of being with nature, and the complicated aspects of treaties and natural resources

Water Protectors gathered on the steps of the Capitol Building in St. Paul this morning to being 4 days of prayer and ceremony in honor of Nibi. Bob Shimek joined the morning show today. He discussed the complications around treaties as well as the spiritual experience of foraging and sharing a fresh picked meal with friends and family.
