Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Throughout Laura’s childhood, her pioneer parents moved the family seeking a better life in different parts of the country– including Minnesota. She later went on to become the famous and loved author of the “Little House” book series.

MN90 Intro: Welcome to MN90: Minnesota History in 90 Seconds.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Throughout Laura's childhood, her pioneer parents moved the family around the country, seeking a better life, going from Kansas to Minnesota and many places around the Midwest. Growing up, Laura had a love for reading and writing. She started to keep a diary at an early age, detailing her family's travels and experiences on the frontier. But it wasn't until Laura was in her sixties that she started writing the Little House books based on her childhood experiences. The first book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published in 1932 and became an instant success. The fourth book in the series, On the Banks of Plum Creek, mirrors her family's time in the Southwest Minnesota prairie. Several locations mentioned in her books, such as Walnut Grove, Minnesota, have become tourist attractions, and fans of the Little House series have visited these sites to experience a glimpse of pioneer life and gain a deeper understanding of the places described in the novels. Although Laura resided in Minnesota for a short amount of time, her literary impact will live with us forever.
