Allison Herrera begins with the location of the Lake Vermilion Boarding School. Allison then introduces author, Dr. Linda LeGard Grover, a professor of Native American Studies at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, MN. Linda begins with a story about her uncle Bob. Bob wanted Linda to know that his mother had no choice but to send the kids to the boarding school. Linda's description of the boarding school situation is very powerful, in a disturbing, not good feeling sort of way. Linda's uncle Bob and his family understood that when he was eight years old, that it was time for him to leave the family to attend school, away from home.
