From early ages, young boys are socialized to act out normative masculine scripts. They are taught that being a ‘man’ means to be competitive, controlling, tough, and emotionally restrictive. Research has shown that many men are socialized to perceive sexual promiscuity as a marker of personal success and self-worth. Today on Culture Clique, we delve further into the issues that produce an environment of sexual violence with “Countering Hegemonic Masculinity”, a talk with special guest Dr. Jonathan Luke Wood from San Diego State University. Dr. Wood was brought his research on the subject to present his findings along side with Dr. Mary Jo Klinker from Winona State Univeristy’s Womens and Gender Studies program.
