This week on Minnesota Native News, we hear about a new change at the Pipestone National Monument after years of concerns from tribes.
Transcript
the Pipestone National Monument in southwestern Minnesota says it will stop selling pipes.
That’s following consultation from tribal nations, who for decades have been saying that the sales desecrate sacred grounds.
For hundreds of years, native people have quarried the red pipestone at the site.
Native craftspeople will continue to demonstrate pipestone carving and share cultural history with visitors at the national monument.
Additionally, a downtown location, away from the site, will be opened to sell pipestone pipes.
