Pianist Laura Caviani leads her trio into the Dunsmore Room at Crooners on Thursday Oct, to play a show centered on the music of Thelonius Monk, one of the great jazz composers. The show is from 7 till 9. In a conversation with Phil Nusbaum, the talk turned to what made Thelonius a great Jazz composer.
REM had yet to release an album. They were touring the U.S. on the strength of their first single, “Radio Free Europe”, and here they were in Minneapolis for a show at Sam’s (later First Avenue) on Thanksgiving in a blizzard. Britt Aamodt finds out what happened to the up-and-coming band when the headliner canceled.
Pop Wagner and Charlie Maguire have created a performance called Woody Guthrie Legacy Voices. It combines Woody Guthrie songs framed in selections from Woodie’s extensive writings. Pop and Charlie told Phil Nusbaum all about the special show.
