The Untold Story of Ifrah Mansour’s “How to Have Fun in a Civil War,” a Midnimo Project Performance at St. Cloud State University

Sometimes a performance needs a gripping title in order to convey not only content, but also the subtlety of emotional weight found within, and Ifrah Mansour’s “How to Have Fun in a Civil War” does just that. In today’s Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Producer Jeff Carmack talks with Ifrah Mansour, a Twin Cities Multimedia Performance Artist, about her one-woman play that was performed at SCSU’s Ritche Auditorium on Friday, April 13, 2018.

The story is presented through the eyes of a seven year old girl with poetry, video, and puppetry, and mirrors Mansour’s experience of spending her childhood in a refugee camp. Her journey towards overcoming grief and connecting with others throughout Minnesota’s Somali community has spawned this wildly successful performance piece that even surprises Mansour herself.

“How to Have Fun in a Civil War” is a part of the Midnimo project, a partnership between the Cedar Cultural Center, the Paramount Centre for the Arts, Minniesota State University Mankato, St. Cloud State University, and Augsburg College.

The Untold Story of St. Cloud Soup: A Potluck, Micro-grant, Fragrant Community Event

In this tasty Untold Story of Central Minnesota, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack sits down at the dinner table with St. Cloud Soup. St. Cloud Soup is a new grassroots organization and traveling potluck that is making profound changes to our community with a very simple idea, sharing soup and funding small but important projects. The volunteer driven organization recently held their winter dinner at the Promise Neighborhood in St. Cloud. Presenters pitched ideas to a hungry crowd that would then vote after eating and chatting to see which idea would be supported by a micro-grant generated by donations at the door. Every big idea has its small beginning, and St. Cloud Soup hopes to be that beginning for other great ideas . . . maybe even yours!
