Delina White: Indigenous Spirit and Gender Fluid Fashion

“I have a lot of friends and family members who are two spirit and it really hurts me when they have issues about being bullied and so I’m here to support my two spirit relatives in being who they are.” – Delina White

Delina White’s Native American inspired clothing line I Am Anishinaabe brings the beauty and details of the great lakes and woodland style to women, men, children and two spirit people all over the world. Her line will be shown on the terrace of the Walker Art Center tomorrow night, June 13th in a special gender fluid fashion show in honor of Minnesota’s Pride Month.

In this episode of Area Voices, Delina discusses the native history behind her Great Lakes and Woodlands styles, the I Am Anishinaabe line, her support of two-spirit people and the upcoming show at the Walker that has LGTBQ sensitivity in every detail from the models to the hosts to the DJ.


To Search the Night: A Jazz Novel by Anthony Swann

Anthony Swann is a well-known poet around the Bemidji area. His poetry collection Paint with Words was released in 2016 and now he’s just released his first novel, To Search the Night: A Jazz Novel. It’s a story that’s been percolating since Anthony was in his early 20s and it’s an adventure steeped the early 1960s Minneapolis jazz scene.

In this segment of Area Voices, in addition to discussing the novel, Anthony shares how his relationship with jazz music changed his life, led him on adventures in San Francisco, Mexico and Brazil, and ultimately altered his view of humanity.


Three Thrillers at the Edge

Patty Feld was instrumental in establishing the Edge Center for the Arts in Bigfork, MN. Since its inception its attracted more and more art exhibits and arts experiences to the Bigfork area. Tomorrow night starts a four day theatrical event that is both unique and thrilling. Three Thrillers from the Edge brings three one act plays to the Edge Center stage. The Wasp’s Nest, The Hitch-Hiker, and Sorry, Wrong Number will take the audience into a world of suspense and intrigue as the classic tales are brought to life. Feld directs Sorry, Wrong Number and she spoke to us on the morning show about how each of the stories unfolds and how each will create its own world of mystery on the stage.


Fishing Opener: Henry and Jon Heglund

Fishing opener is this weekend and anglers across the state are prepping for the big weekend. Jon Heglund and his son Henry live in Bemidji. Like so many others, they are getting ready, too. Katie Carter stopped by their place earlier this week to talk about fishing.
