On this episode of Art Beat we go to Public Launch in downtown Winona for the opening of a photo exhibit by local photographer Ed Hoffman. The exhibit, titled La Gomera: The Island Lost in Time is an attempt to tell the story of La Gomera which is an island in the Spanish Canary Islands. The island has faced the impact of mass emigration, modernization, fascism, and climate change all of which come through in Hoffman’s photographs.
Darcy Reese, Voice-Choir Director at Lincoln High School (LHS) in Thief River Falls, MN shares details on upcoming concerts on Saturday, December 7th and Monday, December 9th at LHS, a grant they received last year from the NWMAC for a big project they were producing last May called “Breaking Down Barriers”, a CD of their work and a LHS choir documentary that premiered recently on Prairie Public television in Fargo, ND.
Author Samuel Shem –his new satirical novel is “Man’s 4th Best Hospital;” author Ruta Sepetys–her new book is called “The Fountains of Silence”–it’s a historical novel set in the 1950s Franco-era Madrid; contributor Gary Rozman will give us his take on Stephen Kings new book, “The Institute;”
Lily Winter returns with another installment of Forgotten Authors–we’ll hear about Belgian writer George Simenon, and Wisconsin author Ed Block on his book “Jon Hassler–Voice of the Heartland.”
Katy Chapman, Professor at the University of Minnesota – Crookston (UMC) campus, applied for and received a grant from the NWMAC for fiber arts equipment and an Artist Residency in Fiber Arts at UMC. She teaches art classes that stress the use of fibers and renewable products – emphasizing a philosophy of sustainability. The classes are free to both the public and UMC students.
