Area Voices: Michael Kelsey

Michael Kelsey has been making and selling jewelry since the 1970s. He owned Kelsey’s As You Like It in downtown Bemidji for 42 years before closing the store and retiring in 2017. He’s still designing jewelry in his home workshop.

Michael stopped by the morning show and let us in on his history as a designer, his favorite stones and the emotional nature of jewelry shopping.

Area Voices: The Babinski Foundation

The Babinski Foundation in Pequote Lakes started as a longtime dream of Donald Babinski. His hopes for animals to have “the shot they need to find a great home” became a reality when the Babinski Animal Shelter opened its doors in 2017. The state of the art facility offers a positive experience for stray or surrendered animals as they await their new homes. The 200 bed shelter includes a veterinary clinic with radiology and surgical suites and over two miles of walking trails on which the dogs are walked four times per day. Vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying/neutering occur on campus.

In three years, the Babinski Foundation has re-homed more than 1300 animals, more than 500 during 2019 alone. Future goals include a horse sancutuary and a larger presence across the midwest. In this Area Voices segment John and Heidi talk with Jennifer Lee from the Babinski Foundation about the organization, the services they provide, their funding strategy and of course they talk about the current cats and dogs up for adoption.

Reina del Cid

This Twin Cities indie folk/rock artist built a following by recording weekly YouTube videos. Del Cid has expanded her sound with the addition of a backing band; they have a new album due out on October 4 and recently released the first single, a song about a ghost named Bernadette. We found out more and heard some tunes when del Cid and her band joined us live in the studio on September 20. It was a preview of their show the same night at Prove Gallery in Duluth.

Paul Cerar

“DIY bedroom rock” is how this young Duluth-based musician describes his music. We got a taste when he joined us in the studio on September 20. He had an album release show for his latest, The Royal We, the following night at Blush in downtown Duluth.

Mary Bue

Since our last visit with this Minnesota native, she made the difficult decision to close her Twin Cities yoga studio in order to follow the pull of making music her full-time job. Bue assembled a new band to record her forthcoming album, The World is Your Lover. Her website describes the collection, due to be released early next year, as “power pop, piano dream waves, and layers and layers of shimmery 90’s influenced guitars.” A lifelong seeker, Bue recently traveled to India, which led to her adding a new instrument, the harmonium, to her repertoire.

Robb Justice

This Minnesota native recently moved back to the state after years spent in Alaska. The singer/songwriter/guitarist, whose influences rock, blues, and country, recently released a second album. He joined us in the studio on October 25 for a preview of his show the same evening at Wussow’s Concert Cafe in West Duluth.
