Virtual Festival Presents Curated Minnesota Music

Each year, through its MN Spin program, the Hennepin County library acquires CDs by leading Minnesota musical acts. Then, the public can stream the music and library cardholders can download the CD tracks. This year’s list of 70 artists selected was given to the Hook and Ladder to curate into MN Spin Virtual Fest. The fest will be available at the hook mpls dot com at 7PM on January 21 and 28. Hook and Ladder curator Joe Holland talked to Phil Nusbaum about the curation process and the groups presented.

Show Me A Story, the current exhibit at The Harlow/Kleven Gallery within the Watermark Art Center, inspires curiosity by inviting the viewer to engage thoughtfully with each work. Laura Goliaszewski curated the show. In this Area Voices segment she discusses the cultural relevance of art, the current and upcoming exhibits, and how experiencing art allows people to more deeply experience themselves and more meaningfully move through the world.

David Karr, Twin Cities Sax Man

He calls himself a born sideman, and he’s been sought after for his sax playing in Minnesota for well over a half century. Fresh from high school, David Karr toured with a big band and then performed for American GIs during the Korean War. In 1954 he moved from to York to Minneapolis to study music at the University of Minnesota. Since then, David Karr has been a go-to sax player in the Twin Cities area. One of the players he most greatly admires was Jerry Mulligan, and he told Phil Nusbaum why.

In this Area Voices segment, Sincero talks with host Katie Carter about her shift from punk band member to life coach, inspirational speaker, and now best-selling author. She also shares solid advice from Badass Habits, a collection of wisdom and a step-by-step guide for readers committed to ditching habits that don’t serve them and developing the habits necessary for the life they want to live.


Area Voices: Gabrielle Congrave Baggenstoss on Sexual Violence, Trafficking & Exploitation

Support Within Reach is an area nonprofit dedicated to helping victims of sexual violence. Gabrielle Congrave Baggenstoss is a Regional Navigator for Support Within Reach. In this Area Voices segment, she discusses her work, explains sexual exploitation and who is at greatest risk, discusses the prevalence of sex trafficking in our region, addresses date rape, and educates on both the psychological effects of sexual violence and how to help individuals who’ve been traumatized it.
