Karlstad Minnesota is 4,004 miles from Karlstad Sweden. But a poet with roots in northwest Minnesota brought the two communities together with a presentation at the Northwest Regional Library branch in Karlstad Minnesota.
Scott Cameron shared the history, climate, industry, and culture of his wife’s hometown of Karlstad Sweden. Part of the story is the music of Swedish rock hall of famers, the Sven-Ingvars. The Beatles were a warm up band for the group in 1963.
Scott is originally from Red Lake Falls and now makes his home in England. He was back in northwest Minnesota on tour to promote his book, In Absentia – a collection of poetry written from 1991 to 2017.
Al Milgrom is an emerging documentary filmmaker. He’s called himself “the oldest emerging filmmaker in America”… In his nineties, he may be right. Al’s debut film “Dinkytown Uprising” premiered this year at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. It follows student protesters from the University of Minnesota in 1970, during a time when lots of students were protesting the Vietnam War. The students in “Dinkytown Uprising,” though, were protesting hamburgers. The film will be screening this weekend in Wadena at the Whiskey Creek Film Festival.
