Exploring Music with Assisted Technology

Music making has mass appeal, but what if you couldn’t sing? Or speak? Lifeworks’ services for people with disabilities includes an innovative music therapy program with four performance bands. Starry Night Prom

For the past 13 years, De La Salle High School in Minneapolis has hosted a Starry Night Prom–a prom for people of all ages living with disabilities. More than 1,400 guests attend, and nearly 200 students volunteer to make the Starry Night Prom a memorable spring event. KFAI’s Katey DeCelle has more.


Say Word! Festival

What started as an after-school poetry club, has evolved into a competitive youth poetry festival. On Saturday, May 7, a spoken word festival called Say Word! took place at the Minneapolis Central Library. The one-day event featured dance performances, open mics, workshops, and youth teams competing in a series of poetry slams, aimed at crowning the 2011 Say Word! champions. KFAI producer Katey DeCelle spoke to founders e.g. Bailey and Sha Cage about the event.


Black Storytellers Alliance

Minneapolis’ Black Storytellers Alliance is a nonprofit organization made up of master storytellers, educators and community supporters who use African-based storytelling methods to reach their audience. They perform for all ages–pre-schoolers to seniors–and emphasize values such as honesty, friendship, love, integrity, manners and self-determination. Produced by Katey DeCelle.


Interact Center for the Visual & Performing Arts

Interact Center for the Visual & Performing Arts in Minneapolis offers professional-level training, performances, and exhibits in multiple artistic disciplines for artists with a wide range of disabilities. Interact challenges existing stereotypes and recognizes the unique talents and vision of people who have long been marginalized. Regional and national performances and exhibitions by Interact artists showcase raw, honest voices that would otherwise not be seen or heard. This story was produced by Katey DeCelle for KFAI.


Harmon Killebrew Memorial at Target Field

Harmon Clayton Killebrew spent more than 20 years as a professional baseball player—many for the Minnesota Twins. Second only to Bath Ruth in American League home runs, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. Killebrew passed away from cancer on May 17, 2011. Fans, friends and family gathered at Target Field to remember the “the Killer,” who will be remembered as much for his kindness and humanity, as for his baseball prowess.
