Community Forum: Confederate Flag Part Two

The Winona Human Rights Commission and Winona State University sponsored a community forum in response to the recent displays of the Confederate Flag and the Maplewood Town Home incident. Last week we featured Presenters Dr, Chuck Ripley, Professor of English, John Campbell from the History Department, and Dr Lee from the Political Science Dept and Diana Miller Ex Director of the Womens Resouce. Together they presented the history of the flag; its past and current uses as a tool of political intimidation and domestic terrorism; its impact on community members; and how we, as a public, can positively respond to symbols of hate and intimidation. Today we bring you the responses of community members during the forum. First you will hear the reaction to the accident that took place this summer when a 18 year old caucasian male driving a pickup truck with a confederate flag hit a small African American child in the Maplewood Townhome housing commiunity in Winona and the actions that followed.
